"Flowers" by ©Rikard Osterlund

The 'Flowers' series is a contemporary rephrasing of the vanitas flower piece, inspired by the Dutch flower painters of the late 17th Century. The flower arrangements here are made up entirely of artificial flowers, silk and plastic, alongside toy flies, snakes and other reptiles. Every detail of the photographs is intended to mimic that which it is not; not natural, not the original, not a painting, not in a great British art museum. The plastic flowers become a symbol of our contemporary excesses, and willingness to replace the real with an easy-to-care-for copy.

"Bronze position in the Series category went to Rikard Osterlund for his series "Flowers", which is a contemporary rephrasing of the vanitas flower piece and was inspired by the Dutch flower painters of the late 17th Century."(c)... read more

David LaChapelle is known internationally for his exceptional talent in combining a unique hyper-realistic aesthetic with profound social messages.
LaChapelle’s photography career began in the 1980’s when he began showing his artwork in New York City galleries. His work caught the eye of Andy Warhol, who offered him his first job as a photographer at Interview Magazine. His photographs of celebrities in Interview garnered positive attention, and before long he was shooting for a variety of top editorial publications and creating some of the most memorable advertising campaigns of his generation. read more...

The golden cloak
oil on panel heightened with gold relief
46¼ x 26¾ in. (117.5 x 67.9 cm.)
Christie's

Spring,ca.1904
Oil on canvas, 174.2 x 365.7 cm

Lenz studied with Gustav Klimt at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and in 1897 was a co-founder of the Vienna Secession. In 1903 he accompanied Klimt on a visit to Ravenna, where both artists were deeply impressed by the hieratic style and decorative use of gold in the Byzantine mosaics. This allegorical figure of Spring accompanied by a peacock dates from around 1904. At the left a couple in contemporary dress watch four dancing nymphs. Its large scale suggests that this work was intended for an architectural setting. ©National Museum of Wales / Amgueddfa Cymru
